"Trump with the Blacks"

Written By Elle Burke

At work Monday morning I had a chat with an older colleague. We talked about the news of the weekend and she said she was impressed with my knowledge of what’s going on and my general interest in politics and how they affect me. She said it was nice to see coming from someone my age. (She’s in her mid 60’s) So I thought this would be a great segue into my first article for the site.

I’m letting you know now, that I’m highly opinionated but try my best to base those opinions on fact and experience, not hearsay. I’m open to various perspectives on any given subject and cannot wait to hear feedback on this one. Sir Donald Trump, who’s no stranger to inciting language, has offended someone again. He demonstrated how he has “a great relationship with the blacks” by going on a rampage against Bill Cosby most recently. Donald surmised that Bill Cosby, an outspoken man in his own right, had hatred pouring out of his eyes when he stated that Trump either run or shut up. With such a favorable relationship with the blacks, you’d think he could have had a civil conversation with Mr. Cosby in which the two expounded upon their love or hatred for one another, you know, constructively or in an adult manner.

I believe that Mr. Trump is incapable of such construction. Most of his ramblings seem to tear people down or make a mockery of their foundations. I thought to myself, if he is running for president maybe he’s trying to give us a preview of more puffery and hate speech to come, or perhaps it’s just one gem in the jewelry box of colloquialisms he collects. I can’t be bothered to figure out which, but what I am wondering is where his black friends were when these comments were made. I even would love to meet them. Ya know, because you’re only as good as the company you keep right? I thought about my great grandmother, a fair skinned woman of the south whom in her earlier years could have passed for white yet made the choice to embrace her blackness and keep strong. Would she agree that Mr. Trump has a great relationship with the blacks? A woman who’s seen the country’s brown people go from colored to African American in her lifetime, would he get her vote?

My generation doesn’t identify with you Mr. Trump. We don’t look like you, sound like you or reason the same way. We shy away from mutually exclusive speak because we have a multifaceted mutually dependent existence. We’re all inclusive like a resort you probably don’t own. I wonder if your comment sounded more like “I have a great relationship with the American people” what support that might’ve gotten you. But that isn’t your aim is it? My ears and many more ears heard you, and you’re not what we want to hear from our next president. I apologize for any inconvenience my reasoning may have caused you to reflect upon, but I don’t subscribe to your line of thinking, thus- it is you who is fired.
